In the most basic sense, the concept of otherness addresses anyone and everyone that we find different from ourselves. This can be defined by, but not limited to, aspects such as race, gender, ethnicity, religion, social class and status. Otherness focuses on social identities and has a great influence on the way majority and minority groups are constructed within a society. As Iran is an incredibly diverse society that is shaped by class and social stratification, the concept of otherness becomes even more complex.
Furthermore, otherness has often been associated with marginalised peoples, whom are often disempowered and robbed of their voice in regard to social, political and religious issues, simply because they are different by virtue from the dominant group. In Iran, there are at least X number of different social/ethnic groups, and discrimination and prejudice among the groups is not uncommon.
This social impact game will address the theme of otherness by simulating real situations inspired by real stories of an Afghan teenager in Tehran. The game aims to virtually engage the young players by offering them different options about how to react and behave when faced with diversity. The story and the rewarding system in the game itself will promote accepting others, tolerance, and respecting differences and diversity.
